It consists of a conical plug housed inside body and sealed with sealing grease or resilient seat. Plug valves are usually used for ON-OFF applications while some customised  shape opening in plug can be used for flow control as well. Similar to Ball and Butterfly Valves, Plug valve are generally quarter turn operated valves, i.e. needs to be operated with a rotation of 90 degrees and a small turning torque to close tightly. The completely equal valve body flow cavity provides a direct flow path with little resistance for flow. Plug Valves are designed as per API 599, API 6D,  and ASME B 16.34 standards.

Function

Plug valves ( API 599, API 6D, ASME B 16.34 )  are quick-opening straight-through valve. Because the rotating movement between the sealing surface of plug and body seat has a wiping effect, it can completely prevent contact with the flowing medium when is in fully opened position. It can also be used for medium with floating particles. Another important feature of the plug valve is that it can be designed to multi-port pipeline, One valve can be designed to two, three, or even four ports. However these customisations are expensive. However, these multiport valves simplify the design of the piping system, Thereby reducing the amount of valves and connection accessories required in the piping.

Operation

Plug Valves use a plug with a through hole as part for the opening and closing. The plug rotates with the valve stem to achieve opening and closing positions. The plug is mostly a cone shaped cylinder and has a port on the cone surface to match with that of the valve body to form sealing. The plug valve is one of the earliest used valve. With simple structure, fast switching and low fluid resistance, etc. they became the best option for general flow control. Generally ,ordinary plug valves acheive seals by direct contact between the machined metal plug and the valve body, howver the sealing is poor due to metal to metal contact. The opening and closing force is large, and it is easy to wear. Because of this, Plug valves with resilient seats ( PTFE, RTFE, etc. ) are used to acheive 100% seal.

Lubricated Type

Lubricated plug valves can be categorised into conventional lubricated plug valves and pressure balanced plug valves. For creating seal, special grease is injected from the top of the plug between the cone hole and the plug to form a film to create a sealing surface. Additionally it reduces the opening and closing torque and improve the sealing performance and valve service life. The working pressure can reach up to 20 MPa or more.  The maximum working temperature can reach up to 300℃ and the maximum diameter can reach up to 20” and above. 

Non Lubricated / Sleveed Type

Non Lubricated or Sleeved type plugs valves are generally Soft-sealed plug valves are often used in applications such as corrosive, highly toxic and high-hazardous medium, where leakage is strictly prohibited. Moreover where the valve material does not contaminate the fluid. The valve body can be built from carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel according to the working medium. A seat and hosuing of resilient material like PTFE, RTFE, PEEK, VITON, etc. is made to eliminate contact between body and plug directly. Additionaly this seal is tightly fit to make a tight seal between plug and valve body. API 599 is the primary standard for design on plug valves.
